"The lot of them (Republican politicians) look like a bunch of grim Pharisees, and it’s all too obvious that all they really care about is cutting rich people’s taxes.
The GOP today is a rump amalgamation of plutocrats and the people who service their air conditioning."Interesting read, if you have the time. Michael Tomasky notes that Romney really is down in most national polls, and that in swing states he is trending downward and likely to lose them. I am constantly pointing to RCP's aggregate of national polls, which when compared to the previous two presidential elections, Obama seems more likely headed towards a win, and not a close one either.
The crux of Tomasky's argument is that the GOP / Mitt Romney are losing for three basic reasons:
- Working-class white Americans tossed their lot in with Republicans because of their desire to maintain their culture, their way of living, giving plutocrats the ability to do whatever they wanted to do by way of profiting off government and policy, but that one-time majority is rapidly shrinking and will soon become a minority;
- The GOP moved so far right, it had no middle faction that would have highlighted the issues of Mitt's Bain years;
- Obama simply is far more likable than Romney...between 20 and 30 points difference.
All true, but I'd add that voters have paid attention to what each party has been doing the past two years, and have noted that when Republicans took control of the House, they created a scorched earth policy that nearly pushed the country into a potential economic apocalypse with a fixed debt ceiling, aka forced austerity.
And of course, we know how austerity's been treating everyone around the world.
