To even think that he was actually eligible to vote for the next papal successor, in light of the ongoing scandal in Rome itself! Former Archbishop of St. Andrews and Edinburgh (senior member in the UK), who stepped down the other week, admitted today to sexual misconduct, but wouldn't specify what that conduct entailed.
Obviously we know what he did.
At the time of his resignation's acceptance, he issued a statement in part, stating, "Approaching the age of 75 and at times in indifferent health, I tendered my resignation as archbishop of St Andrews and Edinburgh to Pope Benedict XVI some months ago."
Today, his tone was different, saying "I wish to take this opportunity to admit that there have been times that my sexual conduct has fallen below the standards expected of me as a priest, archbishop and cardinal."
And of course, in 2011 he said that, "[on same-sex relationship laws] We have failed those who struggle with same-sex attraction and wider society by our actions."
To keep that dark secret (sex with children), all these years, then to openly attack those who were gay and wish to have a legally-binding relationship, is quite remarkable, and quite a steep fall for the one-time leader of the Catholic Church in the UK.
