Favorite shows, Summer 2011 edition.

Summer is the most boring time on TV.  So it's off to the internet we go, and the best spot for finding awesome shows is Hulu.

Misfits: An extremely edgy Brit show where a group of teens end up with superpowers that serve as irony to their actual desires.  It has violence and bad language with adult themes, but it's right up there when it comes originality, script quality and acting.  And it has a great lead-in intro song.  And it won the BAFTA for best drama series. Five stars.

Baka and Test: Summon the Beast: Anime from Japan featuring teens in a special school where students are placed into classrooms of differing quality of equipment, depending upon how smart they are.  From the title, the show centers around idiots - "baka" - and in particular, one idiot student and his adventures.  It just cracks me up watching this show. Four stars.

That's just the current anime show that I have in my queue, but there are dozens of anime shows at Hulu that are worth watching, and many of them are single-season shows, so you can go crazy and watch them back to back and get the whole story completed in a day:

  • Samurai Champloo: It's a journey with three disparate characters and a funky remix of modern motifs in an older setting -- the Tokugawa Era. Five stars.
  • Last Exile: Reminds me a lot of Hayao's Castle in the Sky and a few other of his movies.  Five stars.
  • Ramen Fighter Miki: All about a girl who works for her mom at a noodle shop (ramen) and enjoys street combat. Very entertaining and funny. Only 12 episodes to the whole show, so it's easy to watch all back to back, 6 hours.  Four stars.
And to a lesser extent, there's also:

Shiki: A dark anime about vampires.  Three stars.
